preschool conversations: what does a bunny say?

Students: "Ribbit! Ribbit!"

Me: "Boys and girls, that's what a frog sounds like! What sound does a bunny make?"

Students: "Hop, hop, hop!"

We made these bunny masks today in class. Man, four-year-olds are cute. I wish I could upload a photo of them, but you know, privacy. You'll just have to believe me when I say they were adorable.

call me crazy.

Melissa, Sara, and I were wandering around Chapters on Saturday. While we were there, I spotted a display of novels by Sophie Kinsella.

Me: "Guys! I just remembered that Sophie Kinsella's new book comes out this month!"

(I run over to the display.)

Me: "It's here! Guys, this is it!"

(I grab the novel and hug it to my chest.)*

Teenage Boy (standing nearby and shooting nervous glances my way): "Some book people are really crazy!"

*Despite loving the book enough to hug it, I didn't buy it. I'm a big fan of libraries.

these are my dancin' shoes!

Student: "Mrs. Greer! Look at my shoes!"

Me: "Okay, I'm looking!" (Not sure what I'm supposed to notice; they were the sneakers she wears every day.)

Student: "These are my dancin' shoes!" (Begins to tap her feet and swing her legs!)

Me: Smiles.

Have I mentioned how much I love my students? Or that I'm going to miss them? Because I do. And I am.

a cow's favourite object.

At the elementary school where I'm completing my internship, all of the kindergarteners have music class together. That is 60 four and five year olds!

Yesterday, the music teacher was a bit late so all of the kids were sitting on the mats and getting a bit fidgety. One of the kindergarten teachers tried to distract them by saying, "I have a joke for you!" This got their attention and they all turned to look at him.

"What is a cow's favourite subject in school?"

The kids continue to look at him.

"Moooosic!"

One or two kids laughed and the rest just continued to look at him. Tough crowd.

When the music teacher arrived, all of the kids turned their attention to her and one of the little boys in my class speaks out, "Madame! Madame! I have a joke for you!"

She asks what it is and he continues in one breath, "What is a cow's favourite object? Moooosic!"

Of course, all of the kids burst out laughing this time. I don't think they even realized he had made a mistake. It's all about the delivery, I guess.

not everyone has superpowers.

While I was grocery shopping the other day, I saw a mom and her little boy. He was dressed in Iron Man pyjamas and was running around, dodging other shoppers. He almost collided into someone and his mom sweetly said, "Stop running. Remember, not everyone has superpowers like you."

I thought that was so cute. Imagination is a powerful thing.

Someday I hope to be the kind of mom who will let her children wear fun pyjamas or costumes and imagine they have superpowers.

no need to match.

A mom and her young son were walking ahead of me today in the Walmart parking lot. The son was wearing a bright tie-dyed shirt and blue and white striped shorts.

Son: "Mommy, I can't go in there."

Mom: "Why not?"

Son: (tugs on his t-shirt) "They'll think I'm ugly!"

Mom: "Hunny, you're fine. You don't have to match every day."
